About Central Bookstore

Central Bookstore is a multi-purpose bookstore in Taichung's Central District, housed in a historic building. The renovation kept the original facade and structure and added modern design and interiors, giving the store a literary, artsy feel. It has three floors, each with different services, so readers can enjoy books and culture in one place.

The 1st floor has books, an exhibition area and a shop. The books cover literature, art, history, philosophy, social sciences, science and more, so most readers will find something they like. A small exhibition area shows work on changing themes such as travel, photography, illustration and design. The shop sells design goods, including items from FREITAG, the well-known Swiss upcycling brand, as well as souvenirs related to the bookstore.

The 2nd floor has books and a restaurant, plus a children's play area with picture books and toys where parents and kids can read and play together. The restaurant is a highlight: each dish is based on a story about a writer, so you get a sense of that writer's style along with the meal. The desserts and drinks, such as pudding and cold-drip coffee, are good too, and you can read while you eat.

The 3rd floor has books and a talk space. The small lecture hall seats about 50 people, and every Wednesday the store invites a different speaker to share a topic such as literature, art, history, philosophy, social sciences or science, followed by discussion with the audience. This floor also has a section of history and culture books about Taiwan and the world.

Besides selling books, Central Bookstore hosts talks and events where readers can meet speakers and other readers in person.
