About Old Taichung Station

Old Taichung Station is one of Taichung's key historic landmarks. It has seen the city grow and change, and holds many locals' stories and memories. Built in 1917 in the Tatsuno style (late Renaissance Revival) of the Japanese era, it is best known for the clock tower on its roof, one of the symbols of Taichung. It was once the city's busiest transport hub. It was designated a historic site in 1995 and is now a national monument. Rail service moved out when the new station opened in 2016.

The old station is no longer used for trains. It is now part of the Taichung Railway Cultural Park, a museum of railway history and culture. Visitors can see vintage trains and carriages, such as the DR2700 diesel train that entered service as the Kuang Hua Express in 1966, and step inside the carriages to see what travel was like back then. There are also railway artifacts and records showing how the railway developed and how it shaped Taichung.

Inside the new Taichung Station, the Tielu Street food hall has a wide range of restaurants and shops.

Taichung Prefectural Hall, Taichung Park and the Liuchuan Waterfront are all nearby, so you can visit them together and see old and new Taichung side by side. Taichung Prefectural Hall was a government office building in the Japanese era, built in a classical European style. It is now home to the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau, is open to visitors, and is one of the city's important historic buildings. Taichung Park is the oldest park in Taichung and the first park built in the Japanese era, with a lake, bridges, plants and wildlife, and is a popular place for locals to relax. The Liuchuan Waterfront is a path along the Liuchuan River with clear water and green trees. It is good for walking and cycling and also serves as an ecology education site.
