About Painted Animation Lane

Painted Animation Lane in the West District is an alley less than 100 m long with a surprise inside. The walls on both sides are covered with cartoon and anime characters: from Japan, Totoro, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Nintama Rantaro, Crayon Shin-chan, Chibi Maruko-chan, and Anpanman; from the US, Spider-Man, Garfield, and Winnie the Pooh; and even Old Master Q from Hong Kong.

The murals began when one resident painted One Piece characters on the outside wall of their home. After it started drawing crowds, the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau expanded the paintings to cover the whole alley.

Most visitors are young anime fans who look for their favorite characters, take photos with them, or copy their poses and expressions. Some even come in costume or bring props for more fun photos. Parents also bring their children to introduce them to the characters or share stories from their own childhood.

The lane is open all day, but please keep your voice down at night. For better photos, come on a weekday or in the morning, since weekends and afternoons are busier. This is a residential area, so please keep quiet, do not disturb residents, and do not touch or damage the murals.

Painted Animation Lane is a fun stop for anime fans and anyone looking for a bit of childhood nostalgia, and a good place for photos. If you are in Taichung, take a walk through.
