About Taichung Prefectural Hall

Taichung Prefectural Hall is in Taichung's West District. In the Japanese era it housed the Taichung Prefecture government and the Datun County office, and it was a political, economic and cultural center of the time. The building is neoclassical, with a black and white color scheme and an imposing, European look. It was designated a national monument in 2019, and full restoration began in 2020 to return the century-old building to its original appearance and turn it into a public space for residents and visitors.

After the first phase of restoration on the main building, the hall partly opened for the exhibition "Open a New Page" from December 10, 2023 to January 15, 2024. The restoration took six years and cost NT$655 million. The hall officially reopened on October 15, 2026. The Cultural Affairs Bureau now works here, and the opening exhibition is a special exhibition honoring Taichung's pioneer artists.

Online reviews from local guides say the hall is worth a visit for its classical architecture, contemporary art and a look at Taichung's history and culture. Many reviewers were impressed by the restoration and see it as a good example of combining a historic site with modern use. They also found the exhibitions interesting and informative, suitable for visitors of all ages. Reviewers suggest setting aside half a day or a full day to see it properly.
