About Tripod King Spicy Hot Pot
Tripod King is a well-known hot pot chain with branches across Taiwan. It was founded in 1991 at Zhongxiao Night Market in Taichung and has been running for more than 30 years. It offers several broths, including spicy mala, sour cabbage, a split pot with two broths, tomato and herbal, so guests can choose what they like. The spicy mala broth is the most popular: hot and numbing without being overwhelming, and hard to stop eating. The sour cabbage broth is also distinctive, with balanced sourness and saltiness that deepens as it simmers, a good choice if you prefer something lighter.
Another draw is the free refills of duck blood and tofu, so you can eat as much as you like. Both are delivered fresh daily and simmered until full of flavor, with no gamey taste or greasiness, and both have a soft, bouncy texture that goes well with the broth. There are also meat, seafood, vegetables and noodles. Meats include boneless fatty beef, pork jowl and sliced pork belly, all cut thin so they cook tender. Seafood includes shrimp, crab sticks and fish balls. Vegetables include cabbage, water lily stems and baby napa cabbage. For noodles there are glass noodles, udon and thin wheat noodles, which soak up the broth.
Service is good. Staff are friendly, check on what guests need, and top up broth, add ingredients and clear dishes promptly. The dining room is comfortable, with thoughtful decor and relaxed music. Prices are reasonable: about NT$600 or more per person for a good hot pot, with free white rice and drinks such as smoked plum juice and chrysanthemum tea.
Tripod King is a good choice for a meal with family or friends, and the broth, ingredients, service, setting and price all hold up. Many guests come back after the first visit.
