Nine Suns is a sun cake shop near Taichung's Second Market. It won first place for creative Mazu cakes at the 2015 Golden Cake Awards and is one of Taichung's well-known souvenir shops. Its sun cakes come in several flavors, such as honey, matcha and salted egg yolk. All are handmade, with a flaky crust and a sweet filling that is not too sugary. Besides sun cakes, it sells pineapple cakes, taro pastries, lemon cakes, wabi toast and more, made with quality ingredients and its own recipes for a moist, fine texture.

Nine Suns is also a good place for a hands-on baking class, where you make sun cakes or pineapple cakes yourself. Book ahead. Each class makes six pieces: choose sun cakes or pineapple cakes, and pick a pattern such as a flower or heart. A professional baker teaches each step, and hygiene is taken care of. The class takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and baking and packing take a little over an hour, so you can walk around the nearby Second Market for a snack and come back to pick them up. It suits parents with children or groups of friends, and you take home souvenirs you made yourself.

Staff are friendly and explain each product in detail, with samples and iced tea while you browse. The packaging is attractive and prices are reasonable, good for gifts or for yourself.
