About Lo Banh Mi Pasteur

Lo Banh Mi Pasteur is a Vietnamese bakery on Taiwan Boulevard in Taichung. Founded by Vietnamese owners, it brings traditional Vietnamese bread-making to Taiwan, adapted to local tastes, with many kinds of filled baguettes, croissants, egg tarts and other treats that draw fans of Vietnamese food.

The signature item is the filled baguette, called banh mi in Vietnamese: a French baguette split open and filled with meats, sauces, pickled vegetables and fresh greens. It is easy to eat on the go and is one of Vietnam's national foods. There are dozens of flavors, each with its own sauce, such as satay, lemongrass, fish sauce, sweet chili and peanut. The crust is baked crisp, the fillings are generous, the meat is tender, the pickles and greens are fresh, and the sauces balance salty and sweet.

Besides banh mi, the shop sells croissants, egg tarts and toasted bread slices in flavors such as butter, condensed milk, chocolate, maple, matcha, sesame and garlic, good for breakfast or an afternoon snack. The croissants are soft and sweet, with butter in every layer. The egg tarts are Portuguese style, with a crisp, caramelized crust and a smooth filling that is not too sweet. The bread slices are cut thin, spread with garlic, butter or condensed milk, and toasted golden and crunchy.

The shop is small and takeaway only, with no seating. Order at the counter, take a number and wait for it to be called. Staff can cut the bread or leave it whole, and make it spicy or not. Receipts are issued, but payment is cash only, with no credit cards or mobile payments. Most staff are Vietnamese and friendly, though service can be slow when it is busy. Prices are slightly higher on weekends than on weekdays, but still good value.

Recommended by many reviewers and locals, and often with a line, Lo Banh Mi Pasteur works for a meal, breakfast, an afternoon snack or takeaway, and it is one of the popular places to eat in Taichung.

Lo Banh Mi Pasteur is only a one- or two-minute walk from Mr.Mantter, so it is easy to pick one up for breakfast before you head out. Mr.Mantter does not serve breakfast, and this shop fills the gap. Book a room at Mr.Mantter
